Technology as My Home

Statement Written: December 2013

Many people have become accustomed to electronic technology as an everyday use and are dependent on it. For my personal use I stay connected with loved ones and friends, listen to my music, and for every day household use like cooking and as being a college students myself, homework. I have surrounded myself with these electronics to form my sense of home away from home.

The photograph of my phone, that shows an almost six hour phone conversation with my boyfriend, is really one of our normal phone durations. We do not talk the entire time; there are moments where we just do not say anything at all. Having the thought that the other is on the other side of the phone is enough to give us both comfort and our sense of home.

Since I rely on a phone to connect me with home I started to think about the other electronics I use daily. It occurred to me that I have at least one electronic in my hand at all times of the day. As a musician, music must be on at all times to fill the silence when I am not on the phone, my lap top is open all the time when I am home, and my Nook goes almost everywhere with me for music, homework, and grocery shopping. When I am not using a device I am simply lost because I depend on it so much.
